I know that feeling intimately.

I was born in the projects on the South Side of Chicago. Though I wasn’t raised there, that origin point loomed large. Statistically, the boundaries of my life were supposed to be block-by-block. But my mind refused to stay inside those lines. As a young girl, I was always dreaming. Every night, I would close my eyes and travel. I’d dream of being in distant lands. In those dreams, I would see colors I had never seen in real life and shapes I couldn’t even describe. I would wake up and foretell family journeys before they ever happened.

But carrying a massive blueprint in a tight space is heavy. I spent my childhood wondering, How will I make it? How do I get there?, without even knowing where “there” actually was.

While other kids were playing, I was spending my time looking at Forbes magazine billionaire lists, studying the technology titans who ruled the world. I had an insatiable passion for taking things apart and building them back up. It started small like undoing electronics, wiring up televisions, and figuring out how the current flowed.

And through it all, I had one clear, burning goal: MAKE IT OUT OF THE PROJECTS lol. 😂

At the time, the only road I knew was school. So, I put my head down and ran. That relentless drive carried me through multiple degrees, culminating in a PhD in Information Sciences. During the PhD phase of my education, I landed tech internships that eventually turned into a full-time, corporate role, bringing me all the way to Silicon Valley and, ultimately, working at the largest tech companies on the planet.

On paper, I was checking every box. But internally, I was living a double life.

The preacher in me was trying to serve, to teach, and to minister. Meanwhile, the technologist, researcher, and corporate strategist in me was running global projects. For years, these different parts of myself were completely siloed. They didn’t talk to each other on a daily basis. I went to sleep at night not knowing how to bridge them, feeling like a mutant of sorts, too spiritual for corporate tech, and too analytical for the traditional pulpit.

How did I survive the trauma, the delays, the facts of life, and the sheer weight of that journey?

Two things: Unshakeable faith in God, and keeping my eyes locked on one singular purpose.

Every single year, I sat down and wrote a goal list. I checked those boxes no matter how big or how small they were. That systematic, faith-led discipline is exactly what pulled my future into the present.

But if I could look back and whisper one thing to that young girl staring at the Forbes list and wiring up TVs, it would be this:

“Please, spend more time enjoying and living in the moment.”

When you are running from survival toward a calling, it is incredibly easy to treat the present like a waiting room. I spent so many years grinding for the next checkpoint that I didn’t learn to truly enjoy the journey until much later.
